BADINGHAM WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The War Memorial is situated in the grounds of the parish church and takes the form of a cornish granite obelisk, with lead lettering, mounted on a two stepped base. There are nine names for World War 1 and three for World War 2. The memorial was unveiled in Decmeber 1920 by the Ven. J G R Garlking and reported in the East Anglian Daily Times 7th December 1920. Two names have subsequently been added, one for each conflict; Bessie Carley was added for World War 1 and Frank Kay for World War 2.

Lance Sergeant 5724, 8th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Died 12th October 1917. Born at Badingham. Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial

Bessie

Assistant Matron, Territorial Force Nursing Service. Died 26th April 1920. Buried on North East boundary of Badingham (St John the Baptist) Churchyard.

CLARY

Charles Basil

Private 23806, 8th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Died 2nd July 1916. Age 21. Son of Charles and Louisa Clary of Badingham. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial

DURRANT

John Charles

Private 216635, 107th Battalion, Canadian Infantry. Died 24th April 1917. Age 28. Son of William and Jane Durrant of The Supply Stores, Badingham. Buried at Boulogne Eastern Cemetery

HAMMOND

Albert

Private 200727, 2nd Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Died 15th June 1918. Born in Burton-Upon-Trent, resident in Badingham. Commemorated by a special memorial in Chocques Military Cemetery where he is believed to be buried

SAUNDERS

Charles Herbert

Shoeing Smith 52195, 6th Battery, 40th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Died 5th August 1918. Age 29. Son of Mrs G Saunders of Badingham. Buried at Pernes British Cemetery

Sergeant 15186, 9th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Died 12th October 1916. Age 20. Son of Mr and Mrs H Self of Low Street, Badingham. Buried at Bancourt British Cemetery

STANNARD

Henry Owen

Private 3677, 4th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Died 20th July 1916. Buried at Delville Wood Cemetery, Longueval

Private 18088, 7th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Died 19th July 1916. Age 28. Son of Mr and Mrs W Swann of Cransford. husband of W Swann of Framlingham. Buried at Etaples Military Cemetery

Arthur William

Able Seaman C/J 15777, Royal Navy. HMS Orion. Died 14th April 1944. Age 48. Son of Arthur and Eleanor Fisk of Badingham. husband of Ivy Caroline Lily Fisk of Badingham. Buried at Badingham (St John the Baptist) Churchyard. The Leander Class light cruiser HMS Orion served as a fire support at the Salerno landings in September 1943 and again at the Anzio landings in January 1944, before returning the UK to prepare for D-Day

Frank

Lance Corporal 6145890, Intelligence Corps. Died 18th June 1941. Buried at Badingham (St John the Baptist) Churchyard.

STAMMERS

Arthur

Flight Sergeant 529174, 205 Squadron, Royal Air Force. Died 5th June 1945. Age 28. Son of Wesley George and Louisa Jane Stammers of Badingham. Commemorated on the Singapore Memorial. In April 1941, 205 Squadron received its first Catalina. With the coming war to the Far East, the squadron was engaged in trying to locate Japanese naval forces on their way to invade Malaya and the Dutch East Indies. It moved to Java at the end of the year from its exposed base at Seletar and when Japanese forces landed it retired to the south coast of the Island and in March 1942 to Australia, where it disbanded on 31 March 1942. Flt Sgt Stammers is believed to have died as a Prisoner of War

Geoffrey William

Private 5827176, 4th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Died 25th September 1943. Age 24. Son of William and Mildred Warner of Badingham. Buried at Thanbyuzayat War Cemetery
